KPL Review: Gor Mahia leading in absentia as Sony Sugar finally shows up

The Kenyan Premier League hit its seventh week over the weekend with a total of six games taking place across different grounds in the country.

Questions have been raised about the competitiveness level of the league with Gor Mahia, despite being out of cation in the week due to their engagement in the CAF Confederations Cup still leading the pack; the team having played two games less than everyone bar their continental counterparts Bandari FC.

There have been struggles with finances with Sony Sugar already dishing two walkovers. The Awendo based team though showed up for their game against Kisumu All-Stars to prevent a demotion from the top flight and they gave a good account of themselves after hosting their visitors to a 1-1 draw to extend Henry Omino’s winless streak this season.

Despite the struggles, AFC Leopards is leaving nothing to chance as they aim to wrestle their arch-rivals from their perch with the team currently occupying the second spot following their win over Sofapaka.

The apparent revival of the cat has been pinned on striker John Makwatta who bagged a brace in the tie and with a decent squad to choose from, they can’t be taken lightly.

Zico's KCB rising

Talking of taking things lightly, KCB FC is another team doing their magic silently. In Zedekiah Otieno, they have one of the most experienced tacticians in the Kenyan soccer scene and their 2-1 win over Zoo Kericho saw them climb to third on the log with 14 points; just a point below Gor Mahia.

Of the team’s struggling, Kariobangi Sharks has only won one game and find themselves 14th on the log. They had to rescue a point against Nzoia Sugar FC and they will have to up their ante in the coming games if they are to challenge the other teams.

The same can be said of Sofapaka and Wazito FC; the latter having already changed their head coach to save the situation. Sofapaka, after the financial boost last week, has lost three of their last four games and a loss against Kakamega Homeboyz in their next game might spell doom on head coach Divaldo Alves.
