Kwesi Appiah has listed seven new names to serve Ghana, some of them are slightly familiar, some are names we’ve heard before but with no faces while others have left us asking “who’s that?”
Appiah’s new debutants are found in every department of play. We have a new goalkeeper, defender, midfielders and attackers. Our knowledge of each of these players vary but the most common questions are where do they play, how their game-time time, are we talking youngsters or prime footballers? The ultimate question of “how good are they” will be answered on the pitch.
For now, let us learn a few facts about each individual star before wearing that famous, heavy and dream white shirt of our Black Stars...
🇬🇭 Christopher Antwi-Adjei
Adjiei is a 25-year-old German-Ghanaian midfielder. He plays his football for Bundesliga minnows SC Paderborn. He has played all his career in Germany and essentially plays in the left and right midfield - never centrally. Adjiei has played in all his team’s nine games this season and has one goal and zero assists.
🇬🇭 Torric Jebrin
Another left-footer and they’re always exciting. In Jibril, we’re looking at a 28-year-old attacking midfielder. Congolese and African giants TP Mazembe is the team he has called his own since July 2019. The Accra-born player is far better known in Egypt and Saudi Arabia where he played for four clubs in five years. Jebrin offers his attacking game through the middle.
🇬🇭 Iddrisu Baba
Meet Baba, a defensive midfielder in the mold of Thomas Partey. And guess what? Baba also plays in Spain’s Laliga for Real Mallorca. He is 23 and arrived in Spain to play for Leganes’ U19 side. There’s no questions about his game-time, the Accra-born star has played in all 10 league games for Mallorca.
🇬🇭 Mohammed Kudus
There’s nothing exciting like a 19-year-old stepping into senior football. This kid is a number 10-wearing & left-footed central midfielder for Denmark’s Nordsjaelland. He has five goals in 12 games this season. The Right to Dream Academy is where it started.
🇬🇭 Mohammed Salisu
Another left-footer. This is Mohammmed Salisu, a central defender for Real Valladolid in LaLiga. He is 20 years old and has he faced Lionel Messi? Yes. Does he play regularly? Yes (11 appearances one goal this season).
🇬🇭 Razak Abalora
Not a great deal of information is available about Abalora. The 22-year-old is a goalkeeper for Tanzanian side Azam FC. He arrived at Azam in 2016 from Ghana’s WAFA.
🇬🇭 Shafiu Mumuni
Lastly we have a familiar figure - unless you do not follow the Ghana Premier League. Mumuni is one of the league’s best strikers for Ashanti Gold.
Appiah’s Black Stars will host Bafana Bafana on Thursday November 14 at the Cape Coast stadium. The second qualifier will be out in São Tomé and Príncipe on Monday 18th November.
