Wenger's Premier League verdict following Manchester City's 3-1 loss to Liverpool

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Manchester City cannot bridge the gap between them and league leaders Liverpool.

The defending champions lost 3-1 to their challengers on Sunday evening at Anfield, and the Frenchman feels their title defence is over.

The loss saw Jurgen Klopp's men open a nine-point gap at the top, with City dropping to fourth ahead of the international break.

The Reds have dropped only two points this season, a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford, and look like real title contenders.

“First of all, to lose a big game, it is terrible and you can see the reactions from both managers [last night], how much pressure they are under and how much a game like that means,” he told BeIN Sports.

“Guardiola will go home and be absolutely devastated, more than you think. If you think of a quantity, add 100 per cent to that.

"Overall, nine points is too big a difference for Man City after 12 games,"

City seem to have lost their edge from the side that romped to the title last season and have looked shaky in a number of matches.

They [City] had dropped points in three matches prior to the Anfield defeat, first drawing 2-2 at home to Tottenham Hotspur before losing 3-2 away to Norwich City.

They then suffered a damaging 2-0 loss at home to Wolves to further lose ground on Klopp's boys.

They next host high-flying Chelsea after the international break, knowing they cannot afford another slip-up.
