Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic favours playing in a midfield two as opposed to a three-man midfield.
The Croat, in the absence of the injured N'Golo Kante, has bloomed in the Blues' midfield alongside Jorginho, leading to positive reviews from fans and pundits alike.
Kovacic, in an interview with the club's official website, highlighted his improvement from the player he was last season and pointed at the change of their formation as the gamechanger.
The stats from the season so far have put the Croat on top of charts in England, with Kante the only one averaging more interceptions than him at Chelsea.
"My game is to open spaces for other people," Kovacic told the club's website.
"It’s a big strength and I have felt I am trying it a lot more because we play a little bit different football to last year. Now we are more direct, more aggressive, we just try things we didn’t try last year. I feel better,"
"I think my best position is in a midfield two," he added.
"I can play as well in a midfield three, but in the two I feel maybe more comfortable with more freedom. But in the end, the formation doesn’t matter too much,"
Lampard is expected to change his formation to accommodate the returning Kante, who has been missing through injury for the better part of the season.
The Englishman has indicated he could still play the three midfielders, which means he will be forced to drop one of his attacking weapons upfront.
