After scoring his first-ever goal in a Chelsea shirt, Frank Lampard has revealed that he urged Mateo Kovacic to score more goals before netting in the 2-2 draw against Valencia.
Despite making over 70 appearances for Chelsea, the Croatian midfielder was yet to score a goal for them and had a goal drought having not scored for club or country since January 2017.
Kovacic canceled out Carlos Soler's opener with Christian Pulisic netting in the second half but Daniel Wass scored eight minutes from time to ensure Valencia picked up a point.
Lampard revealed what he told Kovacic before scoring his first goal for Chelsea, "We’ve had a lot of jokes between me and him and the whole squad and him because he’s a player of such quality that should score more goals.
"It’s a project for me, for him and the whole staff to get him more goals and he could have scored two today. I’m delighted for him and I hope that’s the start of something new."
Chelsea will now have to wait for their final Group game against Lille to confirm their progression to the Round of 16.
