There are plenty of Zambian footballers playing for top Absa Premiership and Glad Africa Championship sides and we're not just talking squad players but key players that fans love. Futaa has come up with an XI of the best.
Zambia have offered loads of good footballers over the years and since the birth of the PSL, many of them have lit up Mzansi football’s top flight.
GK: Cyril Chibwe - Polokwane City
The South African-born keeper needed just a few months to establish himself as one of the league’s best after moving from Jomo Cosmos this season. Just when Bafana Bafana made the big call-up, Chibwe quickly committed his international career to Chipolopolo in October.
RB: Gamphani Lungu - SuperSport United
Lungu arrived in Mzansi as an attacker but soon established himself as a goal-scoring right-back. The 21-year-old is currently on four goals in 12 games.
CB: Donashano Malama - Black Leopards
The 28-year-old Malama recently made the move from Chippa United last August. The Leopards man currently has four appearances to his name.
CB: Billy Mutale - SuperSport
Mutale is still looking for his first league appearance of the season with Matsatsantsa a Pitori. Suffering an injury inside the first weeks of joining United did nothing to help.
LB: Rodrick Kabwe - Ajax Cape Town
Kabwe is currently one of the most experienced defenders at Ajax as the Cape side continue their quest to gain promotion to the PSL.
MF: Salulani Phiri - Polokwane City
Phiri is one of the most underrated footballers in the league - though he could do more as far as scoring consistency. Yet, two goals in 11 appearances is not too shabby from midfield.
MF: Austin Muwowo - Orlando Pirates
Muwowo is still only a couple of months into his Pirates career. One appearance this season needs a lot more but Bucs coach Rhulani Mokwena speaks highly of Muwowo: “He has a wonderful left-foot.”
MF: Justin Shonga - Orlando Pirates
Though Shonga is surprisingly struggling for game time this season, ask any Pirates fan to name the best players in the team and Shoga’s name will come up. More game time and a goal will boost confidence and show the Shonga we all know.
FW: Lazarous Kambole - Kaizer Chiefs
Kambole is still searching for his first Chiefs goal since joining in July. But eight appearances from 12 league games is evidence of the coach’s belief in Kambole’s talents.
FW: Augustine Mulenga - Orlando Pirates
It’s hard to name a harder-working player at Pirates other than Mulenga. Three assists and one goal in 11 games is part of the reason Pirates fans get upset when Mulenga is missing from the starting line-up.
ST: Mwape Musonda - Black Leopards
Musonda is the Absa Premieship’s reigning top goalscorer with 16 goals in 2018/19. The old school number nine currently counts two goals and one assist in 10.
- Kennedy Mweene, Collins Mbesuma and Davies Nkausu.
Coach: Wedson Nyirenda
Nyirenda is one of the most hard-working coaches in Mzansi. The former Chiefs striker already has a Cup in his name with the 2018 Telkom Knockout.
