Why the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations has been moved back to January

Cameroon have announced that the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will be held starting from 9th January.

The tournament was set for June and July, but the host nation now says it had to be changed because of weather conditions during the period as it's normally rainy.

This will see the tournament reverted to the same period it was traditionally held, before it was moved to the summer during the 2019 edition in Egypt

This was reached upon following Wednesday's meeting involving the highest members of the confederation, including president Ahmad.

"It [2021 Africa Cup of Nations] will be played in Cameroon from 9 January to 6 February 2021. Date changed for weather reasons at Cameroon's request."

"We have reviewed the period of the competition as requested by the Cameroonian party due to unfavorable climatic conditions during the period initially slated," said Caf's deputy general secretary Tony Baffoe.

"After listening to the various arguments and viewpoints - and in particular from the Cameroonian meteorological authorities, the coaches and players - the representatives of the Afcon organizing committee, which received the mandate from Caf Executive Committee to take the decision, has granted this request.

The move by CAF will see some European clubs lose a number of their first-team players, who will be forced to represent their nations.
