This has already happened to Paul Pogba and it is now happening to Arsenal’s record signing, Nicolas Pepe.
After a match, whether against a top team or an ‘average’ team, record signing players are often looked at and it is always discussed whether they were worth that price.
After Arsenal’s 2-2 draw away at Chelsea, Martin Keown was on Pepe’s case, criticizing his work rate.
Keown was praising one, criticizing the other. It was Gabriel Martinelli versus Nicolas Pepe.
According to Keown, the teenager had a better game than £72million signing Pepe.
Keown told BT Sport: “He’s a shining light. He’s been outstanding. The composure is brilliant.
"He’s happy to do the work. So many players don’t want to run. I know it’s not a night for contrasts but Nicolas Pepe is on the other side not quite working in the same way.
"I think that [Pepe] is a work in progress and can be much better. If we were to compare the distances they’ve compared and high intensity runs… Martinelli is willing to get back and help out."
Following the 2-2 draw in west London, Arsenal remains tenth in the Premier League – ten points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.
