Is Kepa Arrizabalaga Chelsea's weak link?

Kepa Arrizabalaga holds the title of being the most expensive goalkeeper in history, thanks to his £71.6million move from Athletic Bilbao in 2018.

He replaced Thibaut Courtois who moved back to Spain with Real Madrid, and for a moment, Chelsea fans knew they had found a perfect replacement.

He has since been on the spotlight mainly because of poor performances as opposed to starring for the Blues.

The 25-year-old has come under sharp criticism this season, and the talk of the evening on Tuesday night as Chelsea drew 2-2 against London rivals Arsenal

The Blues took the lead through a Jorginho penalty on the 26th minute after David Luiz brought down Tammy Abraham inside the box.

The Gunners, however, came back twice to force a draw, and the spotlight once again shifted to the Spaniard.

Kepa has been the club's weak link this campaign, conceding soft goals that any average keeper could save.

Against Arsenal, he conceded the two shots fired on target and has generally failed to cover his lines well in recent games.

Prior to the Stamford Bridge clash, the Spaniard conceded a 94th-minute goal as the Blues suffered a shock 1-0 defeat away to Newcastle.

His statistics in the Premier League are worrying. He has only managed to keep five clean sheets from the opening 24  games this season.

Of the 132 goalkeepers in Europe's top seven leagues, Kepa is placed 127th in save percentage.

Frank Lampard is said to be keen on getting a new number one, and Arrizabalaga will have the remaining bit of the season to prove his manager and critics wrong.

Lampard has defended the keeper in the past, praising his work ethic and commitment to improve and get to better levels.

"I’m happy. I know Kepa as a professional is a keeper who – and you can see it in his attitude and how he trains every day - is striving to be better, as he should do at his age and the status that he’s at," he said.

"He will want to get better all the time, and there have been a few instances this season where he would be the first one to say he can do better. That’s football at the top level, but I’m happy with him and his work ethic," he added.

The season is entering crucial stages as the battle for the top-four heats up with the Champions League knockout phase on the horizon as well and Chelsea needs to be at their best.
