Absa Premiership giants Orlando Pirates got knocked out of the Nedbank Cup last 32 after losing to Bidvest Wits on penalties this afternoon.
Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer made rather brave changes with Joris Delle, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Zakhele Lepasa - while Gavin Hunt set a strong line-up.
Wits drew first blood when Eva Nga converted a penalty for 1-0 after Fortune Makaringe’s clearance was wrongfully judged as a handball for a penalty on 28 minutes.
Hunt's side made it 2-0 as Deon Hotto outmuscled Ndlovu in an isolated one vs one outside the box minutes before the 45th.
The second half saw Pirates coming as a different animal…
Relentless attacking pressure first gave in on 69 minutes. Thembinkosi Lorch met a Luvuyo Memela ball to blast past Ricardo Goss for 2-1. Nine minutes later, Happy Jele was on hand to header home a Memela freekick.
Pirates thought they had grabbed the winner with Zakhele Lepasa’s extra-time penalty after Memela was fouled by Nange. But Wits substitute Gift Motupa was there to lob past Delle for 3-3 in the final minute.
Two penalty misses from Memela, Lepasa and Kabelo Dlamini allowed Lorenzo Gordinho to convert the winner.
