Black Leopards defender Thabiso Mokwena scored a 90th minute own goal to hand Orlando Pirates three Absa Premiership points.
Many eyes were on Leopards’ former Pirates duo Thabo Matlaba and Edwin Gyimah to prove a point against Bucs. On the opposite side, Pirates made two notable changes with a double central midfield of Linda Mntambo and Siphesihle Ndlovu.
In a tight first half where chances were few and far between, Leopards came the closest to opening the score when Mogakolodi Ngele’s freekick came off the crossbar.
Leopards had the better second half start as Matlaba did great to put in Mwape Musonda but Wayne Sandilands pulled a super save.
Around 20 minutes to the end, Pirates responded with two attempts that hit the post courtesy of Thembinkosi Lorch and Vincent Pule.
Pirates' intense pressure finally paid off in the last minute of regular time. Pule’s attempted deep cross was headed by Mokwena into the far left corner to hand Bucs the victory.
The win helped Pirates to leapfrog Mamelodi Sundowns on second position. Bucs are now six points behind leaders Kaizer Chiefs. The two sides meet in the Soweto derby in two weeks.
