Billy Sharp was on target to save Sheffield United's FA Cup season as he grabbed a 2-1 extra-time winner at Championship side Reading, while Miguel Almiron bagged a brace, to help his Newcastle side into the quarterfinals.
David McGoldrick scored his first goal for Sheffield United this season in the second minute of the match but George Puscas equalized for the home side from the penalty spot two minutes before half-time after George Baldock committed a foul in the danger area.
Neither side could find a winner in normal time, and it took a Billy Sharp headed goal into the roof of the net just before the end of the first period of extra time to send the Blades into the last eight.
In the Newcastle match, Miguel Almiron struck twice as the Magpies reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2006 with a 3-2 win at second-tier West Bromwich.
Valentino Lazaro got the third goal for the visitors before Matt Phillips and Kenneth Zohore scored for the home side to make it a nervy ending for Newcastle.
There will be more fixtures today with Leicester City hosting Championship side Birmingham, Man City traveling to second-tier side Sheffield Wednesday, and an all Premier League affair when Norwich visit Spurs.
