Mateo Kovacic has added to Chelsea's already hefty injury concerns in midfield after hobbling off with a lower leg injury late in the first half of the FA Cup fifth-round tie at home to Liverpool last night.
The Croatian midfielder clashed with Neco Williams and Sadio Mane in the 40th, and he was unable to continue with the match, and Mason Mount replaced him.
The injury did not appear to be an impact one and the nature of Kovacic’s departure off the field suggests he was struggling with an ankle complaint.
A Kovacic absence comes at a bad time for Chelsea, with N'golo Kante injured and Jorginho banned for the next two Premier League games along with the Champions League round of 16 second leg away to Bayern Munich.
Frank Lampard will be hoping for positive news on Kovacic’s injury as Chelsea faces top-four rivals Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday before tests against Aston Villa and Manchester City.
If Kovacic will be ruled out of the clash against Everton, then Lampard will be forced to use Billy Gilmour again after the teenager impressed against Liverpool yesterday.
