Yanga host Simba SC in Sunday highly anticipated Tanzania Premier League match dubbed Kariakoo Derby at the National Stadium, Dar es Salaam.
Simba are on the brink of defending their league title after opening a 20 point gap with second-placed Azam. Simba reached the 68 point mark on Wednesday after beating Azam 3-2 Azam Centre.
Yanga, on the other hand, registered a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Mbao FC on Tuesday and are now third with 47 points.
In their current form, Simba are definitely odds favourite in this 103rd derby.
Let's look at five talking points ahead of this Sunday's clash.
Meddie Kagere likely to punish faltering Yanga defence
The 33-year-old Rwandese striker has been in terrific form this season scoring in almost every match he has played. He notched his 15th goal of the season in Simba's 3-2 win over Azam on Wednesday. The former Gpr Mahia striker is in form of his life and will torment a solid Yanga defence that has let in only 18 goals. Only Simba with 14 goals have let fewer goals.
Will Luc Eymael rule Dar es Salaam?
The much-travelled Luc Eymael has had a mixed record at Yanga since making a highly publicised arrival in January. He has won five, drawn six and lost three and has struggled to dislodge Azam from the second spot.
He will be under a lot of pressure when he faces his compatriot Sven Vandenbroeck on Sunday and nothing but a win will placate the impatient Yanga followers.
Rampant Simba in scary form
Apart from Kagere's sharpness in front of goal, Simba have been collectively in imperious form this season. They have won 22 times, lost twice and drawn twice in 26 matches. They have scored 55 times and conceded only 14 goals. They have the meanest defence and the most effective attack. Kagere's partnership with John Bocco has been very productive this season and the pair is feeding off lovely balls from the midfield marshalled by Francis Kahata.
Yanga have been goal-shy
In the green corner, Yanga have been very timid in front of the goal-scoring 28 goals in 24 matches. The striking force led by Haruna Niyonzima will need to be at their very best in order to break a mean Simba defence. Yanga's goals have been spread across the squad with Patrick Sibomana, Deus Kaseke and Juma Balinya playing a crucial role in their campaign.
Will it be Farouk Shikhalo or Metacha Mnata?
Farouk joined Yanga while on duty with Harambee Stars at the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt. The 23-year-old was touted as the first choice shot-stopper at Yanga but he has struggled to nail down the number one jersey. Eymael has alternatively used Farouk and Metacha Mnata and neither can claim to be the first choice keeper. Who will be given the task of stopping the deadly Simba attack on Sunday?
