The Golden Shoe is presented to the leading goalscorer in league matches from the top division of every European national league.
The traditional top five European leagues get preferential weightings and, as a result, it's almost guaranteed that a player from the EPL, Serie A, LaLiga, Bundesliga or Ligue 1 will claim the prize every year.
Amazingly, either a Real Madrid or Barcelona player has claimed the European Golden Shoe in each of the last ten seasons, with Barcelona skipper Lionel Messi winning the award three times consecutively between 2017 and 2019.
Will Ciro Immobile or Robert Lewandowski disrupt the natural order?
Lazio goal-getter Ciro Immobile currently leads the way in the race two goals ahead of his nearest challenger, Bayern goal-machine Robert Lewandowski. Lionel Messi is eight goals off the pace but you can never rule the great man out, while Cristiano Ronaldo is also lurking dangerously on 21 goals.
👞 European Golden Shoe race
- 🇮🇹 Ciro Immobile (Lazio): 27
- 🇵🇱 Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich): 25
- 🇵🇹 Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus): 21
- 🇩🇪 Timo Werner (RB Leipzig): 21
- 🇦🇷 Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona): 19
Lionel Messi scored 36 league goals for Barcelona last season to claim the Golden Shoe and it looks as though 2020's winner might even exceed that mark. The race for supremacy between Europe's hottest strikers is going to be an exciting one and we'll be keeping a close eye on it, week on week.
