What are the options available for the suspended CAF Champions League?

The CAF Emergency Committee will have to meet and decide the fate of the suspended CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup with finals date fast approaching.

The leagues have been suspended after the deadly coronavirus pandemic swept the continent disrupting the football calendar. Africa has over 1,800 cases with 50 deaths.

Egyptian media reports that CAF is considering staging a one-off semi-final matches behind closed doors in the newly opened Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon. The stadium had been chosen as the venue for this season's final match.

The semi-finals will feature teams from Egypt and Morocco with Raja Casablanca taking on Zamalek as Wydad Casablanca battle Al Ahly. The two countries have among the continent's highest rate of Covid-19 infections and football activities have been suspended indefinitely.

The reports indicate that CAF are looking at three scenarios on how to deal with the suspension as no return dates have been announced.

The three options available are:

  • Go on with the planned dates hoping that by early May, the epidemic would have been contained and normal sporting activities resumed in the host countries. Though this is highly unlikely.
  • Play the semis in a one-off match in a neutral venue behind closed doors. The challenge will be finding a country that will allow sporting activities amid the crisis.
  • Postpone the whole tournament indefinitely and resume at the semi-final stage once the health situation on the continent improves.

The committee is due to meet in early April.
