Man City 2-1 Real Madrid: Varane's disasterclass bundles Los Blancos out of the Champions League

Man City 2-1 Real Madrid: Varane's disasterclass bundles Los Blancos out of the Champions League

Two Raphael Varane mistakes at the back brought Real Madrid to their knees, as Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus punished the Frenchman and helped City seal their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Here's the action:

Raheem Sterling 1-0 9' (AGG: 3-1)

It was a catastrophic error from the Madrid backline, Raphael Varane to be exact, which gifted a chance to Raheem Sterling, who rolled the ball into the back of the net from close range.

About 10 yards out at the byline, Varane was robbed by Jesus, who then squared the ball for Sterling to slot into a near-empty net.

Karim Benzema 1-1 28' (AGG: 3-2)

City looked comfortable after their lead, but the LaLiga champions did not switch off.

It was fantastic work from Rodrygo on the right, floating past Joao Cancelo with ease to get to the byline, then lifting it centrally to find a teammate. Benzema easily got above Fernandinho, and headed into the bottom right corner with ease!

Gabriel Jesus 2-1 68' (AGG: 4-2)

This was yet ANOTHER mistake from Raphael Varane!

It was a long ball up from City, Varane lost his bearings with the first looping ball, allowed it to bounce, and his header back, aiming for Courtois, was weak and allowing Jesus to steal it.

Jesus had so much to do, but he got a fine touch on the ball and bounced it into the net from an angle.

Sterling's day

With his opening goal, Raheem Sterling made it 100 goals for Manchester City across all competitions:

  • Premier League (68)
  • UCL (20)
  • FA Cup (7)
  • EFL Cup (4)
  • Community Shield (1)
