🇵🇹 Why Real Madrid should consider an audacious move for João Félix

It may be a pipe dream that's unlikely to ever happen, but Atlético Madrid star João Félix would be the ultimate signing for crosstown rivals Real.

Los Blancos will soon be eyeing up the continent's finest attacking talent with Karim Benzema approaching his 33rd birthday. They could do a lot worse than to at least keep tabs on 21-year-old birthday boy Félix for a few pretty pertinent reasons. They might well be prioritizing moves for Erling Håland or Kylian Mbappé, but in football, you can just never say never.

So what's so great about him?

☄️ João Félix is a brilliant talent

2019-20 wasn't his best campaign by some stretch, but it must be said that Joao Felix spent long periods out injured and struggling to acclimatize to life in Spain after a €113m move. 2020-21 has been completely different, with Felix scoring seven and creating three already in 10 games across all competitions. It's unlikely he'll keep up that 100% direct goal contributions ratio, but it's been a sizzling start. Massive price tags are usually accompanied by almost unrealistic expectations, but it's clear for all to see that the 2019 Golden Boy winner is ready to graduate from wonderkid status into a key senior player for club and country.

⚔️ Rivalry, risk & reward

There are few things more annoying and damaging for a club than to lose its prized asset to a city rival. If Felix were to do the unthinkable and swap the Wanda Metropolitano for the Bernabeu, he would simultaneously weaken Atléti and strengthen Real. If Zinedine Zidane's side wants to take a leaf out of the Bayern Munich book whos strategy of weakening rivals is well-documented, this would be a power play of note. It would be risky too, sure, but the potential upside would be enormous.

🗿 Karim Benzema's goals need replacing soon

The Frenchman, who turns 33 later this month, is fourth on Real Madrid's all-time scoring charts behind only Cristiano, Raúl & Alfredo Di Stefano with 255 strikes. He is a legit club legend, but the club must start to make a contingency plan for when his considerable powers start to fade.

Directly replacing icons is generally an impossible task, as Real has learned after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018. The Portuguese icon scored 450 times in the famous white jersey, an achievement we are unlikely to see again in our lifetimes, but that doesn't mean that the club hierarchy isn't on the lookout for Galacticos to get the fans off their seats (when they actually return to stadiums). Félix has the presence, star power and match-winning ability to tick an awful lot of important boxes and he's also Portuguese, like someone else we know.

For now, we'll bank on Félix being an Atlético player for the foreseeable future, but don't be at all surprised if their friends from the capital city keep a close eye on developments.
