Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's advise to Anthony Martial

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's advise to Anthony Martial

Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has advised Anthony Martial to maintain calmness in front of goal in order to rediscover his form.

The Frenchman has struggled for form this season compared to last, scoring two in eight appearances so far.

Martial enjoyed a blistering 2018/19 season, scoring 23 goals in total in what was his best campaign ever.

Speaking ahead of their Champions League clash, Solskjaer said Martial could recapture his good form, while also explained that the three-match suspension as a result of a red-card slowed him down.

“Anthony did really develop last season. I thought he made big strides towards becoming the striker we know he can be,” enthused Ole.

“But Anthony is no different from other players in our team [in] that he's not had a pre-season as normal, and he's working to get to his peak form.

“Obviously he lost three games – or three-and-a-half, almost four games – because he had a three-game suspension and it [the sending-off] was very early in the Tottenham game. So he's lost a bit of football. Too much football. He scored against Basaksehir last time [with] a good header, so we hope that he's just going to continue working hard to get to his best again.”

Solskjaer however said he has seen positives in Martial's game, including regularly getting into promising, goal-scoring positions.

“We want Anthony to keep calm,” said the boss. “I thought with France, against Portugal, he showed his qualities as a center-forward, [by] getting into positions. Then [Rui] Patricio made a few good saves, and that might have affected Anthony's confidence.

“For me, it's him getting the chances – that's the big thing. Because I know his conversion rate has always been good. Maybe at the moment, the keepers have made a few good saves against him, but that will change quickly.”

Martial could get a chance to find the back of the net when United host Basaksehir on Wednesday night in a Champions League match.
