Manchester United defend Cavani over controversial social media post

Manchester United have leapt to the defence of  Edinson Cavani following a social media post that has attracted the attention of the FA.

The striker was the hero of the day as United came from two goals down to win 3-2 away to Southampton on Sunday evening, scoring twice and providing an assist in an entertaining clash.

It was after the win that the striker responded to a fan's post congratulating him, with the words “gracias negrito!”, in particular, attracting attention.

The club has now defended the Uruguayan, saying his words were not, in any way, malicious.

In a statement, the club said: “It is clear to us that there was absolutely no malicious intent behind Edinson’s message and he deleted it as soon as he was informed that it could be misconstrued.

"Edinson has issued an apology for any unintentional offence caused. Manchester United and all of our players are fully committed to the fight against racism.”

Cavani has also apologised over the incident, saying;

“The message I posted after the match on Sunday was intended as an affectionate greeting to a friend, thanking him for his congratulations after the game,"

"The last thing I wanted to do was cause offense to anyone. I am completely opposed to racism and deleted the message as soon as it was explained that it can be interpreted differently. I would like to sincerely apologise for this,"
