Laliga giants FC Barcelona are set to appeal the two-game ban imposed over their captain, Lionel Messi.
Messi received his first red card in Barca colors Sunday in their clash with Athletic Club in the Supercopa de España for an altercation with Asier Villalibre with the Spanish federation confirming that the Argentine will only miss two games after it was thought he’d be out for a longer period.
In a statement, Barca said: “FC Barcelona is to appeal the suspension issued to Leo Messi. The Competition Committee announced on Tuesday that the Argentinian’s red card in the final minutes of the Spanish Super Cup Final against Athletic Club shall incur a two-match ban.”
The move means the Argentine will only be sidelined in the club’s clashes against Cornella (in the Copa del Rey) and Elche in LaLiga.
If Barcelona beat Cornellá, the Argentine could make his return in the last 16 of the Copa but if they are beaten, his return could ironically take place against Athletic Club in LaLiga – if the two-game ban is upheld by the Competition Committee.
