Arsenal legend Martin Keown has back the signing of goalkeeper Mat Ryan from Brighton.
Arsenal announced the signing of Ryan on loan from Brighton for the remainder of the season and Keown believes his experience will be a viable deputy for first choice Bernd Leno. The Gunners signed Alex Runarsson from Dijon as their backup keeper following the exit of Emiliano Martinez who joined Aston Villa.
However, Runassorn could be sent out on loan following his calamitous performance against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.
"I was disappointed to see Martinez leave in the first place when you consider he climbed a mountain to get in the first team. But I imagine they couldn’t afford to keep two first-string goalkeepers financially, maybe they didn’t see that as the right way forward," Keown told talkSPORT.
"So this is a good adjustment, Mat Ryan coming in. ’59 caps for Australia, he’s their No.1 goalkeeper, he’s been out of the team at Brighton. He’s coming with good experience and that’s what Arsenal need in the event that Leno gets injured at any point."
The Gunners are still in both the Europa League and FA Cup, competitions which are likely to offer Ryan the best opportunity of first-team football.
