Man City 4-1 Wolves: Mahrez shines as City goes 15 points clear

Riyard Mahrez was the star man as Man City emerged 4-1 winners over Wolves in a Premier League game staged at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

City came into the game on a back of a 20-game winning streak and it was no surprise when they enjoyed a lion’s share of position in the tie. Having won seven points from a possible nine in their last three games, many had given Wolves a slight chance to give their hosts some troubles bout going by their earlier exchanges, there was only bound to be one winner.

It was no surprise when the Pep Guardiola men found the lead in the 15th minute. Rodri, quarterbacking from deep, sent a sensational diagonal pass towards Mahrez on the right with the Algerian firing an unplayable low cross into the six-yard box that left Dendoncker with no option but to turn the ball into his own net.

While Wolves had instances of brilliance in the game, their attackers were left with no support every time they pulled an attack and they almost paid for their reserved approach to the game when defender Laporte had his goal chopped off for an offside just minute to the half time break.

It was Mahrez against who delivered a corner that was half-cleared. Semedo was robbed by Jesus, who slipped the ball down the right for Mahrez. A cross towards the far post was helped on towards Laporte, who slammed home from close range but as they celebrated, VAR had other ideas as it considered the goal scorer an inch ahead of Dendoncker.

On resumption, Wolves seem to have changed their approach and while City attacked, the visitors looked dangerous in the few chances they had. The visitors were to restore parity in the 61st minute when Moutinho curled the ball towards the far post with the arriving Coady powering a header through into the bottom right.

The goal seems not to have changed City’s perspective of the game and they deservingly regained their lead in the 80th minute through Gabriel Jesus. Mahrez slid the ball to Walker down the right with the England international fizzling into a crowded six-yard box, looking for Sterling.

The ball clanked off Dendoncker’s heel, teeing up Jesus, who was six yards out. Jesus made no mistake in what was his fourth goal against the same opponents in five games. Mahrez was to add a third after some error from the Wolves defence with Jesus completing the scoring streak with a fourth deep in stoppage time.
