Xabi Alonso's contract with Real Sociedad B has been extended until 2022, putting an end to rumors that he will take over as Borussia Monchengladbach's new coach.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder was heavily linked with taking over from Marco Rose as manager of the Bundesliga club at the end of this season earlier this week.
However, following rumors that Gladbach has wanted to take a different path, Spanish World Cup champion Alonso has signed a new contract with his boyhood club to continue as head coach of the B team until June 2022.
After guiding the B team to the top of the Spanish third division, Alonso's stock is currently strong.
He has been linked with a top European job, with some speculating that he might take over at Liverpool in the future, but it seemed that his first senior managerial position will be in the Bundesliga.
Alonso finished his career with Bayern Munich in Germany, so he is familiar with the country and even speaks the language.
However, it has now been reported that he will not take over at Borussia-Park, as Rose has left to join Borussia Dortmund.
