Wolves 0-4 Burnley: Clarets on brink of Premier League safety after historic win at Wolves

Burnley are on the brink of safety after brilliant Chris Wood hat-trick inspired them to a 4-0 win away at Wolves on Sunday afternoon.

Wood struck three times in a fantastic first-half performance to become the first Burnley player – and only the second in the Premier League era – to score a top-flight hat-trick since Andre Gray against Sunderland in December 2016.

The striker took his tally to six goals in as many games and 10 for the season for a fourth year in a row since his arrival from Leeds United.

The win moved the Clarets up to 14th on the standings and level on points with Southampton and Newcastle, even though the Saints have a match at hand.

Wood opened the scores in the 15th minute after latching on to a perfect over-the-top ball to finish beautifully past Rui Patricio

They then doubled their lead in the 21st minute as Dwight McNeil put the ball across the area, giving Wood the easiest task in the world to tuck the ball into an empty net.

The striker then completed his hat-trick a few minutes to the break after jumping highest inside the box to meet a corner from Dwight McNeil, and his well-placed header ended up in the top of the net.

Matej Vydra then thought he had given the visitors a fourth goal shortly after the break, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

It however arrived five minutes from time with Wood turning provider, pulling the ball back for Ashley Westwood on the edge of the box to beat the keeper with a fine strike inside the left post.

Safety isn't assured yet for the Clarets, but their first win at Molineux since 1973, boosts their hope of remaining in the top-flight.
