EFL open to moving play-offs to allow CL final at Wembley

According to the PA news agency, the three EFL play-off finals could be rearranged to enable the all-English Champions League final to be held at Wembley.

Manchester City's match against Chelsea is set to take place in Istanbul on Saturday, May 29.

However, following the Government's announcement on Friday that Turkey had been added to the "red list" of high-risk countries, calls for a change of venue for the all-Premier League match have grown louder.

UK people returning from countries on the ‘red list' must stay in a government-approved hotel for ten days.

The Sky Bet Championship play-off final will be held at Wembley on May 29, with the League One and League Two counterparts scheduled for the following two days.

If UEFA contacts the EFL, it is agreed that they will consider all options, including changing the arrangements for certain fixtures to accommodate the Champions League final.

It's possible that the matches will be played on different dates or at different locations.

UEFA has yet to make contact, and the governing body is continuing to prepare for the Champions League final, which will be held at the Ataturk Stadium as scheduled.

Turkey is currently undergoing a state of emergency due to an unprecedented increase in coronavirus cases.

Speaking on Friday, transport secretary Grant Shapps said the British Government was “very open to hosting the final” and that the Football Association was in discussions with UEFA.

He also advised fans not to travel to Istanbul.

“I’m afraid we are having to put Turkey on the red list. This will have a number of ramifications. First of all, it does mean with regards to the Champions League, fans should not travel to Turkey,” Shapps told Friday’s press conference.

“The FA are in discussions with UEFA on this. We are very open to hosting the final but it is ultimately a decision for UEFA.

“Red countries are those which should not be visited except in the most extreme of circumstances.”

Aston Villa also offered to have Villa Park used.
