Liverpool and Netherlands set to lock horns over van Dijk Euro participation

English giants Liverpool and the Dutch national team are set to go head to head over the availability of defender Virgil van Dijk in the Euros.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has previously expressed his thought on the defender’s availability for his national team for the summer tournament with the German having the idea that the player needed to rest something that Dutch manager Fran de Boer is not for.

According to journalist Chris Bascombe, via the Irish Independent, recent comments by Frank de Boer won’t have gone down well at Anfield.

The Netherlands boss is quoted by ESPN, via SportBible, as saying “I think he has to decide. It is his career,” about van Dijk. “I can imagine that he is in a dilemma. I hope he has made giant steps in his rehabilitation.”

Virgil has been out of action since October last year, after being clattered by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside Derby but the player should be fit for the summer tournament even though Liverpool are not for the idea as they feel the player needs to be monitored for a few more weeks.

The player has been involved in the Dutch team meetings even when injured and there is a strong feeling that he would go against his club’s wish and appear for his national team in the tournament.
