South America WCQ: Messi helps Argentina past Uruguay as Colombia hold Brazil

South American giants Brazil and Argentina were both in action on Sunday night in their World Cup Qualifiers against Colombia and Uruguay respectively.

Brazil who are preparing for life after Neymar past 2022 produced a sluggish performance away to Colombia as they were held to a goalless draw by the hosts.

The visitors dominated possession in the first half at the Estadio Metropolitano in Barranquilla, with Neymar stinging the hands of David Ospina with a fifth-minute drive but that was the same story in the second half by both teams who couldn't find a goal to separate them.

Brazil will be hoping that they can have a change of fortunes when they host Uruguay on Thursday on a day that Colombia will be up against Ecuador.

In another match of the day, Argentina ran 3-0 winners over Uruguay with Lionel Messi being among the goalscorers.

It was the PSG man's 80th international goal in a game that saw the hosts leave Edinson Cavani on the bench with Luis Suárez leading the line in a conservative 5-4-1 formation.

Messi opened the scoring in the 38th minute after is dinked ball into the penalty was meant to connect with the run of Nicolás González but he managed to evade both the Fiorentina man and goalkeeper Fernando Muslera before bouncing into the net.

Lautaro Martínez mis-hit his effort from outside the area only for the situation to develop perfectly for Rodrigo de Paul to race onto the ball and fire Argentina's second. De Paul returned the favor after the interval by sending a beautiful low cross right into the path of Martínez to direct into an empty net.

On Thursday, Argentina (2nd place, 22 points) will play host to Peru while Uruguay (4th place, 16 points) travel to face Brazil.
