🧤 ⚽ Premier League's scoring goalkeepers

The goal-scoring role, in any football team, is normally given to strikers.

It's nothing new though to see other players across the pitch to get their names on the scoresheet.

Rarely though do you see goalkeepers scoring. Their main role is ensuring their ball does not kiss the back of the net at all costs.

A good number, though, have over the years got their names on the scoresheet, with some specializing in penalty taking.

In the English Premier League, only six goalkeepers have gotten their names on the scoring charts.

The most recent is Liverpool's Alisson Becker, who scored an important goal during the 2020/21 season to help Jurgen Klopp's side qualify for the Champions League.

Here is the list;

Peter Schmeichel – October 2001

Arguably Man United's all-time top goalkeeper, Peter became the first goalkeeper in the Premier League era to score a goal in Aston Villa’s 3-2 defeat to Everton.

Interestingly, this was his ninth goal of his career.

Brad Friedel – February 2004

In his 450th appearance, goalkeeper Brad Friedel scored one goal but still ended on the losing end in a thrilling encounter between Blackburn Rovers and Charlton Athletic.

Claus Jensen scored moments after Friedel's goal, bringing an end to a crazy Premier League clash.

Paul Robinson – March 2007

Robinson became the third goalkeeper to score a Premier League goal in March 2007.

It was also the first time a goalkeeper scored from a freekick, which came deep in his half for Tottenham against Watford.

He still remains the only English goalkeeper to achieve this feat.

Tim Howard – January 2012

Tim Howard wrote his names in the Premier League history books a number of times, but one stood out.

The former American international scored for Everton against Bolton in 2012, with the windy conditions playing a key role.

Asmir Begovic – November 2013

Arguably the best goal scored by a goalkeeper in the Premier League. Asmir Begovic scored for Stoke against Southampton, with his strike earning him a place in the Guinness World Records for the longest goal in competitive football.

One more thing, it came in the opening 13 seconds of the match.

Alisson Becker - May 2021

The most recent goal came during the 2020/21 season. With Liverpool seemingly headed for a draw against West Bromwich that could have hugely impacted their European hopes, Becker rose highest to head in the winner deep in injury time.

It proved important as the Reds finally managed to finish among the top-four teams.
