Manchester City grabs win in Silva's record club appearance

Manchester City kept the pace with Liverpool in the title race with a 3-0 win over Wolves at the Etihad, with Gabriel Jesus grabbing a brace on Monday night.

Kevin De Bruyne added a third after replacing record-breaking David Silva who made his 267th league appearance for the defending champions.

Man City took the lead in the 10th minute after patiently building up their attacks from the word go. Aymeric Laporte who scored the equalizing goal in the first leg meeting at the Molineaux saw Leroy Sane unmarked along the left flank and put the ball on his way sumptuously. The German winger laid a low cross across goal and Jesus mad no mistake as he tapped in to open the score.

Boly's tough night

One goal down and desperately chasing the game, Wolves were reduced to ten men in the 19th minute after a Wily Boly poor challenge on Bernado Silva. The Portuguese international was lucky to continue playing after the reckless challenge caught him. Referee Craig Pawson did not hesitate to flash the red card for Boly, who scored in the 1-1 drawback in August 2018.

This was the first time Wolves are playing with 10 men since facing Middlesbrough back in March in the Championship. Then they ended up with nine men and won the match 2-1.

"The top sides are finding it difficult against them when they drop into that back five.  I think at times when they play the rest of the league they struggle to break them down and play the extra pass.  But they have a really good counter-attack and we saw that in the game at Molineux earlier in the season." Jamie Carragher observed for Sky Sports at Etihad as he analyzed the visitor's approach to the game.

Man City were awarded a penalty after Bennet brought Sterling down in the area in the 39th minute. Jesus took the spot kick and beat Rui Patricio in goal to grab his second for the night. Against Burton in the cup duty, Jesus struck four times in what represented a record in his career.

Patricio made quite an easy save to deny Kyle Walker after the Man City fullback tried his bit of luck from 25-yards but his effort lacked power and the Portuguese keeper gathered it with ease although the ball had taken a deflection in the 57th minute.

Two chances for the Cityzens went begging the first one seeing Sterling bottling it up in front of Patricio. The England winger would have actually taken a simple lob over the keeper who had slightly left his area. The second chance fell on Fernandinho but his effort from a distance took a deflection and went over the crossbar. Both chances came in the 69th and 70th minutes respectively.

After joining the fray and starting to ask some serious questions of Wolves backline, Kevin De Bruyne finally found the back of the net twelve minutes to the end of the regulation time. The Belgian playmaker whipped a cross that deflected slightly off Romain Saiss and Conor Doherty before the ball slid into the bottom corner of Patricio’s left post.
