LaLiga wrap: Iniesta has emotional Barcelona reunion & Spain U19s star in European Championships

A wrap of the week as the 2019/2020 LaLiga season edges ever closer

What’s been going on in LaLiga this week? New signings, LaLiga teams back in Europe and a ground-breaking Madrid derby in New York City… it’s all here.

Espanyol return to Europe with a victory

Espanyol has played an official European fixture for the first time since the 2007 UEFA Cup Final, hosting Icelandic side UMF Stjarnan in a qualifier for the 2019/20 Europa League. Over 19,000 fans were in attendance to see the Catalan club win their first leg 4-0 with braces from Facundo Ferreyra and Borja Iglesias.

An emotional match for Iniesta

Andrés Iniesta, who was recently named a LaLiga Icon, took on his former club Barcelona for the first time in a pre-season friendly with his new club Vissel Kobe. Former Blaugrana players David Villa and Sergi Samper also represented the Japanese side in a match that Barcelona won 2-0 thanks to goals from Carles Pérez.

A first Madrid derby outside of Europe

Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid met in New Jersey with Atleti coming out on top with a 7-3 victory. This was the first Madrid derby played outside of Europe and just the fourth held outside of Spain, after the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals in Lisbon and Milan and the 2018 UEFA Super Cup in Tallinn.

Inui returns home

Eibar has welcomed Japan international Takashi Inui back to Ipurua. The winger departed the Basque team last summer for Real Betis and, one year on, he has returned to the club where he took his first steps in Spanish football. “This is my home and I appreciate the opportunity to return,” he said as he was presented.

Three signings in one day for Leganés

July 24th was a very busy day for Leganés. In the space of four hours, Los Pepineros announced the acquisitions of Roberto Rosales, Marc Navarro and Martin Braithwaite. The two right-backs and the forward will form part of Mauricio Pellegrino’s 2019/20 squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo joins a list of legends

Cristiano Ronaldo was back in Madrid to receive the MARCA Leyenda – MARCA Legend, in English – award, joining a list of prestigious sports stars that includes Michael Jordan, Usain Bolt, Muhammad Ali and several other footballers. “A big part of this award owes to what I did at Real Madrid,” the Portuguese player said. “It's a Spanish trophy and it's a real honour to receive it.

Granada continue to strengthen their squad

Darwin Machís has returned to Granada, becoming the newly promoted side’s sixth reinforcement of the summer. They had already brought in Neyder Lozano, Domingos Duarte, Roberto Soldado, Yan Brice Eteki and Yangel Herrera as they aim to build a squad capable of surviving in Spanish football’s top division.

Real Betis visit their Mexican fans

Real Betis have been continuing their pre-season preparations in Mexico, where they defeated Querétaro 2-0, before losing to Puebla by the same scoreline. The tour of Mexico was a major success as Mexican fans and media were able to interact with the players, including the Mexican duo Andrés Guardado and Diego Lainez.

Borja Mayoral is back with Levante

After spending last season on loan from Real Madrid at Levante, Borja Mayoral has agreed to return to the Estadi Ciutat de Valencia in the same capacity for the 2019/20 campaign. The 22-year-old striker returns full of confidence after forming part of Spain’s winning squad at this summer’s European Under-21 Championship.

LaLiga talents steer Spain’s U19s towards glory

Spain’s youngsters overcome Portugal 2-0 in the final of the 2019 European Under-19 Championship, with Valencia’s up-and-coming winger Ferran Torres scoring both the goals.
