Da Gama suggests Gavin Hunt for Bafana, but he’d also take the job

Highlands Park coach Owen da Gama has recommended the likes of Gavin Hunt for Bafana Bafana but says he would accept the offer if given.

With the South African Football Association (SAFA) set to name Stuart Baxter’s successor at the end of August, Da Gama has explained why Hunt, Steve Komphela and Pitso Mosimane should be considered.

"I have previously recommended quite a few coaches in your presence. I said I thought Gavin Hunt. I thought Pitso Mosimane. I thought Steve Komphela,” said the Highlands Park coach to Times Live.

“So I have recommended those. It is difficult for me to answer you on that.”

The former SA U23 coach said that he would gladly take the opportunity should SAFA present the chance his way.

"But if nobody is available and I’m asked to serve the country‚ I will serve the country. But as you know I have made my recommendations.”

Da Gama, whose recent successes include promoting the Lions of the North from the National First Division (now renamed the Glad Africa Championship) and leading the side into the MTN8 this season, explained why his recommendations should lead Bafana.

“If you look at the way Wits play‚ if you look at the way Golden Arrows play‚ you look at the way Sundowns play‚ I think we play to our strengths and I think that is important‚” said Da Gama.

“I just think that the intellectual property of our soccer has got be nourished and has got to grow.”

"And with coaches like Komphela‚ Hunt and Pitso‚ if we can just nurture and play to our strengths you know‚ these guys understand the cultural dynamics‚ the diversified type of approach to the game‚ I think we can get there,” added Da Gama.

The man known as ‘Rubber Doll” concluded by expressing his gratitude for Baxter after having once served as his assistant at Bafana.

“I have always said that Stuart Baxter‚ I think‚ has laid a good foundation for us. He has brought in a different dimension with a lot of discipline and we thank him for that.”

“But I think we have to grow as I said that intellectual property has got to be nurtured and has got to grow.”
Meanwhile, Da Gama’s Park are looking for their first win of the season ahead of traveling to Maritzburg United this Friday.
