Gareth Bale was sent off on Sunday night after he twice fired Real Madrid from behind in a 2-2 draw against Villarreal.
Samuel Chukwueze was on the starting line-up for Villarreal but could not find the back of the net and was replaced with Javier Ontiveros in the 55th minute.
Real, held at home by Real Valladolid a week earlier, were again without injured forward Eden Hazard but handed full debuts to fellow summer signings Luka Jovic and Ferland Mendy.
Real Madrid felt a first hit when Gerard Moreno put Villarreal ahead in front of home fans at the Estadio de la Ceramica just after 12 minutes, but Bale equalised in time to end the first half at even.
Villarreal again took the lead in the 74th minute through Moi Gomez but Bale was up to the task as he brought the game on equal terms.
Quick two yellow cards in the 90th minutes saw referee Jesus Gil Manzano send Bale off as the tie ended in a stalemate.
