Chelsea legend in awe of club youngster after debut against Sheffield

Chelsea legend Pat Nevin has joined football fans heaping praise on the club's youngster Billy Gilmour, who made his senior debut on Saturday against Sheffield United.

The Scot came as a second-half substitute, replacing Tammy Abraham with eight minutes to go, and was given warm applause as he took to the pitch.

Nevin, on his column on the club's website, believes the club has wonderful young players in their ranks, and Gilmour will be great in the near future.

“There may have been real surprise around the ground when Billy Gilmour got the nod as well,” he wrote in his column for the Chelsea official website.

“Now those who follow Chelsea closely will know that the young Scotsman is very highly regarded at the club but those outside of Cobham and the 5th Stand bubble might be less educated.

“He will be and is already a very, very exciting talent; Chelsea fans will definitely see more of him in the coming years. Up in Scotland however, his ability is not unknown.

“In fact, there was much despair at Rangers and in Scotland generally when he was brought to Chelsea.

“There was a fear he could get lost in the huge churn of talent that is here and indeed the Premier League overall,"

Gilmour joined Chelsea from Ibrox two seasons ago, and has developed into one of the best young talents across Europe.

He was named on the bench during the club's UEFA Super Cup final against Liverpool, before finally making his bow against Sheffield.
