🤺 Man United vs Arsenal: Five classic clashes from Old Trafford to whet the appetite

Two fierce rivals of the Premier League era will do battle again and although neither club is in contention for the title, passionate animosity exists between the clubs to this day.

Arsenal hasn't won a Premier League match at Old Trafford since 2006 but they must do so here to make a big statement in the race for the top four.

What are some of the most memorable clashes to have gone down between United & Arsenal at Old Trafford this millennium?

🤺 The Battle of Old Trafford

United 0-0 Arsenal
21 September 2003

Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy smacked an injury-time penalty against the crossbar which sparked ugly scenes as Arsenal players surrounded and intimidated him. Van Nistelrooy had earlier been involved in an altercation with Patrick Vieira ten minutes from time which resulted in a second yellow and dismissal for the Arsenal captain. The 0-0 draw was one of the more eventful goalless clashes you'll ever see, and it returned the Gunners to the top of the league.

🍕 The Battle of the Buffet

United 2-0 Arsenal
24 October 2004

The Invincibles were bowled out for 49 as their unbeaten Premier League run finally came to end at Old Trafford of all places. Van Nistelrooy put United ahead in controversial circumstances after Wayne Rooney went down under a soft challenge from Sol Campbell. Rooney put the icing on United's cake to make it 2-0 and Arsenal's players felt justifiably aggrieved at numerous decisions made by referee Mike Riley, who overlooked a number of dangerous United fouls and then awarded the contentious spot-kick.

The ill-feeling between the players continued into the tunnel as Arsenal's 17-year-old midfielder Cesc Fàbregas was alleged to have thrown pizza at United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger branded van Nistelrooy a cheat and criticized referee Riley's performance. Just another United vs Arsenal clash.

🇹🇬 One-nil to the Arsenal thanks to Adebayor

United 0-1 Arsenal
17 September 2006

Togolese hitman Emmanuel Adebayor scored a late winner and their 1-0 success at Old Trafford remains their most recent triumph at the Theatre of Dreams. United's debutant keeper Tomasz Kuszczak had earlier saved Brazil midfielder Gilberto's penalty after the Polish keeper had brought down Adebayor. Ade scored five minutes from time, collecting a threaded reverse ball from Cesc Fabregas to slide it under Kuszczak and gift Arsenal a precious three points. In stoppage time, Arsenal's keeper Jens Lehmann produced an astonishing save to deny Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who couldn't quite believe his luck.

😱 Theatre of Dreams becomes Arsenal's nightmare

United 8-2 Arsenal
28 August 2011

A day to forget for Arsenal, who followed up a 0-0 draw with Newcastle and a 2-0 loss to Liverpool with an 8-2 mauling against a Wayne Rooney-inspired Manchester United. Arsenal's makeshift back four of Carl Jenkinson, Johan Djourou, Laurent Koscielny and Armand Traoré had no answer to Rooney's hat-trick and a couple of sublime Ashley Young strikes, among others. To compound their misery, Jenkinson got sent off and Robin van Persie missed a penalty.

It was a rock-bottom moment for Arsène Wenger in the aftermath of selling key players Cesc Fàbregas and Samir Nasri.

United 3-2 Arsenal
28 February 2016

The 18-year-old scored twice inside three minutes for a United side depleted by injuries. It was an opportunity for Arsenal to put to bed their horrible record at Old Trafford but again they came up short and doubts around their mental strength resurfaced. The result derailed Arsenal's fading title challenge too.
