A last gasp goal from Casemiro handed Real Madrid a point following a 2-2 draw against Club Brugge who were a man down late on after Ruud Vormer was sent off.
Zidane's men were quickly off the blocks looking to avert their 3-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain last time out in the competition but Emmanuel Bonaventure threw the cat among the pigeons in the 9th minute when Percy Tau was just onside when he ran down the left and crossed to Bonaventure who was fortunate to tap in despite losing his footing.
Luka Modric who was handed his first start after being sent off in the opening win over Celta de Vigo in La Liga passed the ball straight to Emmanuel Bonaventure and the Nigerian raced away to fire past Courtois in the 40th minute as again he almost fell over just before he shot.
Madrid came back strong in the second half and introduced Alphonse Areola for Thibaut Courtois and Marcelo for Nacho. Los Blancos managed to pull one back in the 51st minute when Karim Benzema's cross was headed in by Sergio Ramos which required VAR checking before it was allowed to stand.
Brugge were unfortunate to go down to 10 men in the 84th minute when their captain Ruud Vormer was handed his marching orders for a late tackle on Vinicius Junior. Madrid made Brugge pay immediately as they pulled one back a minute later when Kroos chipped the free-kick into the box from right to left and Casemiro rose to angle a super header just inside the far post.
Madrid next take on Granada on Saturday 5th October while Club Brugge welcome Gent on Sunday 6th October.
