Ajax Amsterdam defender Sergino Dest has revealed that he always visualised the idea of playing for the Netherlands national team according to ESPN.
Dest is said to be eligible to play for the United States of America or the Netherlands through his parents, despite having made appearances in two friendlies for the US national team.
According to reports, the 18-year-old withdrew himself from both sides in this international break in order to give himself the opportunity to seek advice and make a decision on his future.
"When I thought of football when I was younger, it was always Ajax or the Dutch team," Dest said in an interview with U.S. club teammate Alex Mendez, published on the Ajax website.
"Never the U.S. But I haven't been approached by the Dutch team."
Dest was born to a Dutch mother and American father and grew up in the Netherlands. According to the ESPN, the youngster grew up speaking Dutch and only got in touch with his American roots when he visited some years ago.
"My father is from Brooklyn, but we spoke Dutch at home," Dest said. "Actually, until a few years ago, my English was very poor.
"I wasn't thinking of my American roots at all until I went to play in an American youth team. From that moment, my English improved, and I started to feel more American.
"I realised that: 'Hey, this is my nationality, too.' Now I think it's great to be an American as well. It's an asset and as well. The U.S. passport is one of the best in the world."
