Ole Gunnar Solskjaer receives Rio Ferdinand backing

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has backed club manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, amid increased pressure due to poor results.

Solskjaer started his management life at Old Trafford with a near-perfect record as a caretaker manager, but the results have since dwindled after getting the job permanently.

The situation has become worse for the Norwegian in the current season, where they have poorly performed in their opening eight matches and lie a distant 12th on the log with nine points.

Speaking on Saturday, Ferdinand indicated United knew Solskjaer will need some time to get the team back on track and will be 'naive' to sack him now.

"There's no way the club would have thought this would be rosy straight away, they're not naive enough to think that it was going to be a situation where he just changes it overnight," he told talkSPORT.

"This is definitely something where there is going to be early pain, there is going to be a situation where the results are not going to go our way, especially with the new recruitment that they've started to go with younger players,"

"That's why I don't see there being a change straight away, I'd be very surprised if I wake up, open a paper or an app and see that he has gone so quickly,"

United are missing some key members of their squad through injury and will face a daunting task to beat league leaders Liverpool in their next match after the international break.
