“At last, Nigeria have finally replaced Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha,” many have already said about Joe Aribo.
Aribo scored his second goal for the Super Eagles against Brazil last weekend and it was only his second cap since the midfielder’s September debut.
Here's a zoom in on the left-footed talent...
Player bio 📊
Full name: Joseph Oluwaseyi Temitope Ayodele-Aribo
Club: Rangers FC
Position: Central midfield/ number 10
Estimated transfer value: € 500 000.
Aribo’s coming ⬆️
Born in England’s London to Nigerian folks, the young Aribo’s very first steps in football began in South London at the Kinetic Academy aged 15.
The 1.83 m tall footballer made continued progression up the academy’s youth sides until the former Wimbledon striker Marcus Gayle spotted him. Gayle signed the 19-year-old for non-league side Staines Town and before a move to Charlton Athletic 12 months later. Consistent senior football led to Patrick Vieira comparisons as well as a move to Scotland to play for local giants Rangers FC under Steven Gerrard.
Playing style & strengths 🥊
The simplest and accurate description of Aribo’s football is: driving with the ball from the centre into the opposition box. He has explosiveness, physical power to keep position under pressure, passing and of course an eye for goal. Think Yaya Toure and Paul Pogba at Juventus.
Current seasons stats: Four goals & two assists in 16 games.
At 23, Joe is still learning to master the complicated game of midfield football. Those are areas such as when to pick the early pass or charge forward and speeding up play or slowing the game.
