Dumisani Zuma had his scoring boots on as Kaizer Chiefs defeated Chippa United to extend their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership log.
Coach Ernst Middendorp made as high as seven changes after last weekend’s win over Orlando Pirates. The entire back four was changed in an effort to rest the side - including Philani Zulu in central midfield, as well as Dumisani Zuma and Lazarous Kambole up front.
On the opposite side, coach Norman Mapeza made minimal changes after 120 minutes against Mamelodi Sundowns last Sunday. Unfortunately, that decision somewhat proved damning for Mapeza. In a freak event, Chippa lost no less than three players through a series of forced injuries inside 44 minutes.
Chiefs and the game’s first clear chance came on 25 minutes through Philani Zulu. A loose ball dropped for the midfielder before he struck a shot with his right but Chippa’s defence did well to block the shot.
The game’s opener came via Zuma on 67 minutes. Zuma intelligently found himself free in the number 10 area before a perfect first touch before passing the ball inside the bottom corner past Patrick Tignyemb.
The Pietermaritzburg-born attacker had a brace to complete. Zuma picked up the ball in the far left, cut inside to take a shot that flew under Tignyemb on 90+3.
Amakhosi’s win now sees the Glamour Boys go seven points ahead of champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
