FIFA investigates possible match-fixing in WC qualifiers

Ahead of the 2022 FIFA Wolrd Cup tournament in Qatar, the governing body FIFA has now confirmed that they are investigating a possible match-fixing offense in one of the qualifiers match for Group F.

The game they are looking into is Myanmar's 7-0 loss to Kyrgyzstan in an away match in October 2019, which was a third straight loss for Myanmar who had been beaten by Mongolia and Japan in the other group clashes.

“We are looking into this matter,” FIFA said, confirming reports in Myanmar media which said officials had visited the country to question players.

“Anyone found guilty of match manipulation will be subject to severe sanctions as FIFA has recently introduced minimum bans of five years,” the soccer's world body added in a statement.

Myanmar next plays group leader Japan and Kyrgyzstan in March.

The top two nations in the five-team group will advance to the next stage of qualifying for the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
