Liverpool defender Joel Matip has revealed how Lionel Messi was "desolate and depressed" moments after the Reds dumped Barcelona out of the UEFA Champions League in May last year.
The Cameronian defender spoke to German football website 11 Freunde describing how he found the Argentine "lonely and completely depressed" in a anti-doping control room.
“When the entered the room to undergo the doping control, there was a boy sitting there completely depressed. It was Messi. You know other players by playing against them, but it's not like you're sitting next to each other in a small room. Everyone was celebrating and here I was sitting there in a cubicle with Messi," he said.
Matip played the full 90 minutes as Liverpool staged a memorable comeback overturning a 3-0 deficit as they beat Barca 4-0 at Anfield. The Jurgen Klopp charges progressed to their second successive finals where they beat English rivals Tottenham 2-0 to lift the title.
