💶 The top ten values of footballers back in 2010, according to transfermarkt

Transfer values of football's top stars have skyrocketed in recent years with the top ten transfers in European history all going over the €100m mark.

Reflecting on 2010 is, therefore, a highly interesting exercise. Only Lionel Messi's value broke the €100m barrier, showing how much the footballing landscape has changed from a financial standpoint in the past decade, and how much it can still change in the future.

According to transfermarkt, here are players whose values cracked the top ten back in 2010.

💰 2010's most valuable footballers

  • 🇦🇷 Lionel Messi: €100m
  • 🇵🇹 Cristiano Ronaldo: €90m
  • 🇪🇸 Xavi: €65m
  • 🇪🇸 Andrés Iniesta: €60m
  • 🇧🇷 Kaká: €60m
  • 🇪🇸 Cesc Fàbregas: €55m
  • 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Wayne Rooney: €55m
  • 🇪🇸 David Villa: €50m
  • 🇪🇸 Fernando Torres: €50m
  • 🇫🇷 Franck Ribéry: €50m
  • 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Steven Gerrard: €50m
  • 🇸🇪 Zlatan: €46m
  • 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Frank Lampard: €45m
  • 🇳🇱 Wesley Sneijder: €45m
  • 🇨🇲 Samuel Eto'o: €40m
  • 🇨🇮 Didier Drogba: €38m

Despite Real Madrid missing out on silverware, Cristiano Ronaldo's market value grew from €70million to €90million in that period but Kaká, largely a disappointment at Real Madrid, would see his value drop sharply after 2010. The Premier League's most valuable player at the time was Arsenal's Cesc Fàbregas, who was at the pinnacle of his career and on the brink of World Cup glory with Spain. His international colleagues Xavi and Andres Iniesta were understandably valuable at the time too.

It's amazing how the sport has changed, especially in regard to player values. Alex Iwobi's 2019 move from Arsenal to Everton was valued at €40m, to put the numbers on this list into perspective.
