Without the coronavirus, the Champions League finals should have been held today in Istanbul Turkey.
It is one of the most coveted trophies in world football but one again that has evaded some of the best talents. So who are some of the best players to have not laid their hands on one of Europe’s best accolade?
- Dimitar Berbatov
Dimitar Berbatov has been in and around the Champions League final three times. In 2002, he came off the bench in the 39th minute for Bayer Leverkusen. In 2009, he had less time as Manchester United fell against Barcelona. Then in11, he was left out of the 18-man United squad as they fell to Barcelona.
- Fabio Cannavaro
Despite winning the World Cup while captaining Italy, the defender only won the UEFA Cup at Parma and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League with Inter Milan.
- Paul Pogba
Has only made one Champions League final - the 2015 defeat to Barcelona for Juventus-despite almost picking every trophy in the world stage.
- Michael Ballack
He was part of the Bayer Leverkusen team that finished runners-up in the Bundesliga, German Cup and the Champions League. He had another chance of winning the trophy in 2008 with Chelsea but were undone by Manchester United in the final.
- Robert Pires
Robert Pires was 32 when he played in his only Champions League final - Arsenal vs Barcelona in Paris in 2006. It would be his last game in an Arsenal shirt.
- Ruud van Nistelrooy
Only five players have scored more Champions League goals than Ruud van Nistelrooy but he has never even played in the final.
- George Weah
The current Liberian president won eight trophies at Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Chelsea, but nothing in Europe.
- Sergio Aguero
Turning 32 next month, the Argentine striker knows that his days to win the big trophy might be over soon more so if City can be banned from the competition.
- Francesco Totti
In a career which spanned a quarter of a century with Roma, Totti won the Serie A title and two Italian Cups. The Champions League was out of reach though.
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic
The Swede has 31 major honours but the Champions League is none of them. This coming despite playing for some of the biggest teams in Europe.
- Robert Lewandowski
Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Raul are the only players who have scored more Champions League goals than Robert Lewandowski but the Polish is yet to put his hand on the trophy.
- Gianluigi Buffon
Six goalkeepers have made more than 100 appearances in the Champions League. Five of them have won the trophy. Gianluigi Buffon is the odd man out. Three finals. Three defeats.
The closest he got was the semi-final with Real Madrid in 2003 when they were knocked out by Juventus. And he was on the books of AC Milan when they won in 2007, but having joined from Real mid-season was cup-tied and unable to feature in the Champions League.
