Media reports indicate that the 2022 Africa Nations Championship(CHAN) has been shifted from January to June/July dates, Algerian FA has announced.
The change of dates was necessitated after the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations was pushed back for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Last week, CAF announced that the 2020 CHAN will take place in Cameroon in January 2021 as the 2021 AFCON was rescheduled to January 2022 in Cameroon as well.
Algerian Football Federation (FAF) secretary-general Mohamed Saad confirmed the switch in an interview with an Algerian radio station.
“We recently received correspondence from the African football confederation which asked us to postpone the CHAN 2022 to the summer of 2022, after AFCON 2022 was pushed to January 22. CAF has suggested organizing this competition between June and July, but we will be making a final decision shortly in consultation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports," he said.
The changes mean that the tournament will take place at a time when the temperatures will be high in North Africa and could see matches scheduled late into the night for comfort.
