Solskjaer speaks about Chris Smalling's return from Roma loan

Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Chris Smalling still has a value at Old Trafford after the defender's loan deal with Roma was ended.

Smalling's loan deal with Roma came to an end and head to head back to United after the Italian side failed to give the defender a contract extension. Roma will be up against Sevilla on Thursday in a Europa League clash and the England international will not be able to feature after loan expiry at the end of the Serie A season last Sunday.

In his press conference ahead of United's Europa League second leg tie with LASK on Wednesday, Solskjaer reiterated Smalling's value to the Red Devils.

"Chris has shown over his career at Manchester United how valuable he is," he said.

"This season was about him being a regular, going to Roma and proving how good a center back he is. I wanted to give Harry [Maguire], Victor [Lindelof] and maybe Axel [Tuanzebe] a chance, so that was the best for him to go and play for a year."

"Chris has shown this season he will be valuable. I’ve been speaking to Chris throughout and been delighted with his season."

"This transfer window is a long one and every transfer takes it course. It is what it is. At the moment, I have no updates for you. If there is any news, we will update you," he added.
