France ran 4-2 winners over Croatia in a Nations League clash staged Stade de France on Tuesday night.
Croatia was to take an 18th-minute lead through Dejan Lovren from the corner kick. The ball slipped through the box for the former Liverpool man to slot past Hugo Lloris whose block wasn’t strong enough to keep away the ball.
With the game balanced and Croatia doing all they can to extend their lead, it was France who restored parity though Griezmann three minutes from the break. The goal was his 31st international strike which saw him move into fifth place in the all-time goalscorers list for France and level on goals with Zinedine Zidane.
Martial was to score a goal deep in the first half but his effort was counted as an own goal by Dominik Livakovic.
Trailing 2-1 coming into the second half, Croatia was to withdraw Ante Rebic for Josip Brekalo in the 46th minutes and they were to level matters ten minutes after the resumption when Josip Brekalo displayed some great takers inside the French 18-yard box before scoring a fantastic goal that left Lloris stranded.
France was not going to give up hope yet with Deschamps making a double chance in the 63rd minute; out went Ngolo Kantee and Ben Yedder for Eduardo Camavinga (debut) and Olivier Giroud. The changes seemed to have helped as RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano was to tower above the Croatia defence to head home a Griezmann corner.
Things went worse for Croatia when Giroud stepped from the penalty spot to slot France’s fourth with 13 minutes remaining on the clock; this coming after Lovren had tackled an opposition in the box- a move that handed him a yellow card.
