European Roundup: Shock defeats for Barcelona and Real Madrid as Zlatan shine in Milan derby

After the international break, club action resumed in different leagues in Europe with a host of mouthwatering clashes on show.

In the Laliga, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid both lost their games against Getafe and Cadiz respectively. After Madrid had gone down earlier on, Barca had the perfect opportunity to ascend to the top of the log but that didn’t happen as Jaime Mata scored the only goal from the penalty spot early in the second half to deny them all the three points.

The win lifted Getafe up to second, level on points with leaders Real Madrid with the lost being Barca’s first under the leadership of Ronald Koeman.

The same results were recorded by Madrid who suffered a home defeat at the hands of 1 Cádiz. The winning goal came in the first half from Anthony Lozano, whose chip over Thibaut Courtois had enough on it to get over the Real Madrid keeper and into the net.

Still in Laliga, as Barca was struggling to find goals, their former striker Luis Suarez scored a goal to add to that of Yannick Carrasco as the duo helped Atlético Madrid to a 2-0 victory at Celta Vigo.

In the Serie A, Federico Chiesa was sent off on his Juventus as they were held to a 1-1 draw at promoted Crotone.

Napoli recorded a 4-1 win over Atalanta but the action was left for the Milan derby where Zlatan scored a brace to help AC Milan to a 2-2 win over arch-rivals Inter.

The 39-year-old striker had missed recent games after contracting coronavirus and only resumed training this week, but scored twice early on.

Ibrahimovic put Milan in front after 13 minutes, tapping the ball in from the rebound after his penalty was saved by Samir Handanovic, and then struck again three minutes later from Rafael Leao's cross. Romelu Lukaku pulled one back for Inter in the 29th minute but it was less from preventing Milan in continuing with their perfect start to the season.
