Chelsea 0-0 Sevilla: Hosts held at home in opener

Chelsea began their Champions League campaign with a scoreless draw against Sevilla on Tuesday night in a match hosted at Stamford Bridge.

Sevilla looked shaky in the earlier exchanges and gave the ball away in dangerous areas twice in the first two minutes but have got away with it with Chelsea unable to punish their mistakes. The first serious move from the home side was to come in the sixth minute when a nice cross from Werner fell to James, whose low first-time cross was dealt with well by Diego Carlos.

The Laliga side grew into the game but did lee with the much possession they enjoyed; their first major move seeing Jorginho getting into the referee book after he gave the ball away to Ocampos and hauled him down after realizing he was to instigate a dangerous move against the home side.

Chelsea goalkeeper Mendy who was coming in for Kepa was forced into an awkward save in the 18th minute following a free-kick that had deflected off Zouma. Sevilla was to be forced into an early change with Joan Jordan coming on to replace Sergi Gomez who pulled out with an injury; the first half ending with no team getting the better of the other.

Hakim Ziyech was to come on a minute past the hour mark for Mason Mount with another change seeing Frank Lampard bring on Kovacic for the already booked. Jorginho

It was, however, Sevilla who were to come close in the 66th minute with two corners on the trot. The second was lifted over the defence to Jordan, who from 16 the visitors were to bring on Youssef En-Nesyri and Franco Vazquez De Jong and Rakitic.

The later stages were a good spell for Sevilla with the Spanish happy to knock the ball around to abide time; a move which saw them earn a vital point away from home.

Chelsea, however, will breathe a sigh of relief as they were handed a chance to right their wrongs in the second game after the other match in Group E between Krasnodar and Rennes ended in a 1-1 draw.
