Belgian international Jeremy Doku on his unexpected move to Ligue 1 side Rennes

Rennes' newly-minted signing Jeremy Doku has admitted that he did not expect to leave Belgian side Anderlecht during the summer transfer window.

Doku joined Rennes in a move that was worth €26m + bonuses with a sell-on fee clause early in the month but he insists that it was unexpected.

"I was not thinking of a departure. I imagined doing this season at Anderlecht then a few teams were interested in me.

"I chose Rennes because it was the best project that came to me".

The 18-year-old also believes that he made the right decision to move to Ligue 1 and expressed his delight at the side being able to compete in the Champions League.

"Ligue 1 is a higher level, we play in the Champions League. I have to take new steps. I will be expected to do more with my new club, for sure, but this It's up to me to prove it.

"I'm not going to say that I followed all the Rennes matches, but I knew the importance of the club in French football."
